Kids’ birthday celebration is an essential event in the calendar and the feast would not be completed without the birthday song and the cake. No matter where you live, the birthday song is definitely sung at the celebration which has become a characteristic that represents the unity and harmony of the people gathered.

However, its ownership is not a commonly discussed topic and only a handful of people are aware of the song’s owners. Although it is commonly sung in kids as well as adults’ birthday functions, a majority of the people will be surprised to hear that the song cannot be sung publicly without the relevant permission from the owner.

The origin of the birthday song dates back to the early 1900’s but the tune is much older than that. The tune was first used in 1893 in a kids rhyme with the words “Good morning to you”. It was composed by Patty Smith Hill, who served as a nursery teacher and her sister, Mildred J. Hill came up with the tune.  The song became very popular in America as Hill sisters were among the pioneers in child education system and it was published in a book of kindergarten rhymes.

After about thirty years since the tune was made up, the words Happy Birthday and related expressions were added to the song as the second verse of the song. However Hill sisters were not keen on getting their song copyrighted and several motion pictures included the song in their creations, after which, Jessica Hill, the third Hill sister took hold of the copyright in 1935. She shared the ownership of the song with the Clayton Summy Musical Publishing Company which was later bought by a British supervisor who changed the name of the company into Birch Tree Ltd. After that the company’s ownership was again transferred to the Warner family who is currently responsible for the happy birthday song.

With the time passed, various additional phrases have been used along with the traditional verse and the following song is a majorly used song.
