Easter is the day Christians believe that Jesus’s resurrection occurred 3 days after his crucifixion. It is celebrated on the Easter Sunday which is the last day of the holy week. The Holy week starts 40 days after the lent season which is the season of confession and fasting. The Holy week comprises of the Maundy Thursday, the day Jesus’s last supper was held, Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified, Black Saturday and Easter Sunday when Jesus was risen from the dead.
Since Christianity is closely attached to music, there are numerous Christian songs and hymns that are used in religious functions and Easter songs and hymns are popular as well. However, there is one main easter song that has been composed using the Jesus’s resurrection story which was written by Annie Herring. It was published in 1974 and since then, the song has preserved as a performing song as well as a church hymn. Apart from the Easter song there are abundant Easter songs available in hymnals and given below is one such popular hymn.O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
Although the Easter is mainly observed by Christians, the term is said to have been derived from the name of an Anglo-Saxon goddess named Eostre. Eostre is the goddess of spring and a belief denoting that the Easter is the festival of spring. Spring is the season of fertility and it is the season rabbits and birds generally reproduce. Thus the story of Easter bunnies and Easter Eggs was started and in the modern world, there are various songs connected to the concept of Easter bunny and eggs. Children are the main audience of these songs and given below is a song depicting the connection of Easter bunnies and the resurrection of Jesus.
Before the break of day,
An angel came from heaven
And rolled the stone away.
When Jesus’ friends came seeking,
With myrrh and spices rare,
They found the angels at the door,
But Jesus was not there. All in an Easter garden,
Where water lilies bloom,
The angels gave their message
Beside an empty tomb:
“The Lord is here no longer,
Come, see where once he lay;
The Lord of life is risen indeed,
For this is Easter day.”
The following song is another popular song used in nurseries and kindergartens to teach children about the Easter bunny.
And many surprises I bring;
As long as no child is peeking,
I’ll leave my tokens of spring,
I’ll leave my tokens of spring. I come when the children are sleeping,
Hiding eggs in each cranny and nook;
And then quick as a wink, I’m leaping
Right back into my storybook,
Right back into my storybook.
